15+ Ideas for Engaging Your Employees Virtually

Last month, Five to Nine brought 30+ people leaders together to discuss ideas for engaging employees virtually. The event allowed us to share our thoughts and ideas for how people leaders can continue fostering community despite the widespread shelter in place orders that have forced widespread work from home for companies. As part of the event, we compiled a list of 15+ events to engage employees virtually. The guide ranges from fitness and learning to team-building and family-centric activities.

The community also had great ideas for events that were working for their organizations. We’ve shared some of them below:

Shira at Masterclass shared how they have “MC Shares”, where people can share their hobbies with the organization. They’ve also done a version of MTV Cribs branded as “MC Cribs” where people share their homes or remote offices in a fun way. After getting feedback via Five to Nine, they did MC Cribs again, but instead an Earth Day version where people shared their sustainability practices.

Christina and Trinidad at Niantic discussed how they have coffee and tea time in which they provide conversation prompts to drive engagement amongst their teams.  Also, their Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) created a virtual book club where they were reading The Memo by Minda Harts and Wolfpack by Abby Wambach.

Kylie at Relativity shared how their Chief Product Officer created a website called At Home Challenges that features weekly challenges for employees and their families to join. Each week, everyone votes on the challenge winners. Previous challenges included: “Build Your Own Pet” and “Design a Home for a Superhero.”

Tyler at BetterCloud shared how they have a Virtual Water Cooler, which is a running video conference for anyone to jump into and chat. They also have a Recipe Round-Up where they compile everyone’s recipes in a shared document. Trinidad at Niantic suggested this be made into a company cookbook — we love that idea!
