Five things to Help you Cool Down During a Chaotic Day

We all have those days when life gets stressful. The work just piles up, and you can’t stop it. 

It happens to the best of us. But what matters is getting ahead of it, and not letting it ruin your day. Here are some tips a tricks to help calm down during a hectic day at work:

  • Meditation- Apps
    • Meditation is a great way to learn how to center yourself. You can buy books, take classes,  but the best and most helpful way is to use an app. There are many apps out there to help you learn to meditate, but many of them will require you to pay for a membership or give you a free trial for a certain amount of time. Apps such as “Breathe” and “Calm” show you how to relax without costing you a cent.
  • Aromatherapy- lotion
    • By definition, aromatherapy is the use of aromas (often essential oils) to enhance a feeling of wellbeing. Specific feelings of wellbeing include Lavender to relax, and citrus scents to energize and focus. A good way to do this if you’re at work is to use specifically- scented lotions, such as the Aromatherapy Line from Bath and Body Works.
  • Tea
    • Most herbal teas, particularly chamomile, has a soothing or sedative like effect that helps to calm your mind and center your body. It is recommended to help you relax during a hectic day or wind down for a good night’s rest.
  • Go for a walk
    • Depending on where you are, take a nice stroll through the Chicago Riverwalk or along the lakefront to get some fresh air to clear your mind. Studies have shown that a 20-30 minute walk can have the same effect as a calming tranquilizer.
  • Listen to music
    • Studies have shown that listening to music slows blood flow, which decreases our levels of stress hormones. Classical music is especially good to calm down the nerves and help maintain focus.
